Given the strength of public feeling about this, were I advising the McCanns I would say the following: Wind up the Fund, NOW and donate what has been collected so far (all of it) to something like the National Missing Person's Helpline or another appropriate charity....which would have the added benefit of making you look good.

If they don't think they can stretch to legal costs from their own reserves, set up another fund specifically for that purpose...but be open and up-front about its aims and objectives and exactly what the money will be spent on. People should always make an informed choice about what they donate to and the onus is on the recipient to make absolutely sure that this is crystal clear before asking people to part with their cash.

I agree with what you have said aside from the setting up of another fund to pay their legal fees.

We all in life have to be responsbile for our own financial issues and cannot go cap in hand to others to fight our legal problems.
If this becomes a criminal law case I am not aware that people have to pay to fight their case. They usually automatically get funding despite their financial situation and this is done in the interests of justice. they are in the UK now so the UK would probably be the ones having to subsidise the case.

If the McCanns want more money to fight tyhe case it is solely because they want a QC [which would cost extra].. and that quite frankly is being arrogant.
If we were charged with a criminal offence, we woud have to settle with the counsel we were given or the High Street firm in our town!

The McCanns were surrounded by a large group of very smart, savvy folks right from the beginning. Folks who looked ahead and tried to prepare for any contingency. The info about the use of the fund actually said it could be used to help support the family while they searched for Madeleine. Now with them both being named suspects it is possibly not feasible for them to go back to work. Therefore, even though they are wealthy by most standards they still must be running low on funds to pay their bills. Not that I believe this all to be alright, and other families with missing children have no options such as this. But still, the folks looking out for the McCanns have been very sharp in making sure they will be supported as long as necessary. Which is very fortunate for them, if one can use fortunate in discussing a family who lost a daughter.

I agree about donating the existing fund to missing persons, but as far as setting up a fund to help them with legal fees that is another matter. I would wan't to know exactly what has lead to them being suspects, all of it. You can't make me believe it is JUST the DNA in the car. That is not conclusive as DNA can be transferred quite innocently. If the rest of the evidence is circumstantial then the PJ do not have a case to answer. It is all speculation.

Maybe it's time to dig in to their own purse strings, and sell some of their assets off to pay for the legal costs, (get a cheaper house for a start) after all is said and done, if they hadn't been out feedind themselves and with their children none of this would have happened.
Why should other people pay into funds for these two.
I just wish the wee girl was found safe and well, I don't give a toss for those 2 idiots

a difficult question
and i think the best one asked on this matter so far

i agree with you
i also agree with others
firstly and most important should be find Madeline
secondly what about the twins they will be missing her too

so think of Maddy and the twins
and other missing children

if the parents are found to have had something to do with Maddy`s absence
then they should be locked away for eternity
with no further contact off the twins
so USE THE MONEY for THE TWINS

if maddy is found safe and sound
(( which i believe we all HOPE FOR her safe return ))
and had been abducted
then any money left should be given to
CHILDRENS CHARITIES
for other children to help them

This fund, supposed to be for the help find Maddie appeal, is and should be for exactly that. But, if the mcanns are found guilty, then they should also be charged for taking peoples money on false pretences. The money stands over a million which only goes to show how many kind hearted people there are out there, who have a heart, feelings, emotions, more than what i believe Maddie's parents have shown. If they want money for any other purpose other than to find Maddie then let them get a bank loan, sell their house, etc, that's what most of us would do to prove our innocence, that's if their innocent of course, which i don't believe for one minute.

It is terrible that the McCann clan are still in control of the fund. They aren't using it for their defence but they still have control of over 1 million pounds to do with as they see fit. They as good as admitted Madeleine was dead when they considered using it for their defence team. The Find madeleine fund has no objective now as there is evidence to prove that she died on May 3rd. The latest is that they are going to use it for a PR offensive. PLEASE everyone sign the online petition to freeze the fund.

The fund was to help find their daughter. Until it is prooven she is dead 100% the fund should be used for this purpose.

I regret that it would appear that the fund has not been used for this purpose.

It might help if the directors of the fund made a public statement as to what has been spent and how it has been spent.

They will have to when accounts are filed.

Us the English we are so willing to give and everyone who has given should never feel that it has been a waste so I agree that after a length of time but how long I don't know, when they know looking for her is pointless then yes the money should go to a charity.
As for defence that is up to the Mc Cann's people have enough real charity cases to give to.

I think that they should give the money back to the people who donated it in the belief that they would be doing some good and that some of the money would actually go towards trying to find Maddy...like myself!!!
