Is it really going to be safe to rebuild New Orleans? Isn't it still going to be below sea level? They have 100,000 homes built on volcanic ash by Mt. Ranier, and homes built on sand bars in North Carolina. If someone builds their house on an obvious potential hazard area - the area gets wasted several times, and then someone builds a house again there, then why sould our government keep bailing out people who choose to live in a place that isnt' safe. I realize how much these people need help. But if you camp your house by a volcano then isn't it partly your fault if your house ends up buried in ash? It's just insane... I'm not trying to be insensitive, but people need to think. right?

I agree with the New Orleans and sand bar assessments. But volcanos can go for hundreds if not thousands of years between eruptions.

When Pompeii and Herculaneum were destroyed in 79 A.D., there was no Latin word for "volcano" because the last eruption of Vesuvius had happened in about 1500 B.C.

The people of the towns built on and near the volcano had no idea that Vesuvius was a dormant volcano until it erupted.

It sounds bad but they should have left that place a lake. Crime was always high, low income families mooching off the government. nola is the boil on louisiana's ***.
