I experienced what I believe was a haunting in the Seventies while renting the upstairs of a two-story house. Most nights, the family downstairs were gone. While they were out, I would hear footsteps and doors opening and closing. Also, the TV in the basement would switch on, and the volume would be turned up. Throughout this time, I went downstairs repeatedly to check on these sounds, often because I needed to ask questions or give them rent checks; but, they were never there, and all of the lights were off. Often, when I was trying to sleep, I would be awakened by the basement TV and would have to go downstairs to shut it off--again.
One time, when I went to the basement to do this, I opened the door at the top of the stairs and saw that the family's pet poodle was hanging from the banister, choking. I rushed down the stairs and ran around to the side so that I could lift her enough to ease her breathing. Then, I managed to unbuckle her collar. I have no idea how she could have wrapped her leash around one of the posts; she would have had to walk off the surface of the stairs to do this, and that was impossible! Thank goodness, she was all right. I replaced her collar, removed the leash and placed her back on the ground floor before returning to shut off the set.
I never mentioned any of this to the girl who lived across the hall. Then, one day, when I returned from my weekend at home with my parents, she said, quite distressed, "I'm so glad you're back! I got so scared this weekend that I had to go stay with friends! There were footsteps, and the doors opened and closed, and the TV kept switching on, and THEY WEREN'T HERE!" Yes, by then she was shrieking.
All I could say was, "Oh. You heard it, too?"
"You knew about this?!"
"Yes. It's all right though. I'm sure it's just a ghost and nothing harmful." (I never told her about how I'd found the poor dog.)
Not long after that, she moved out of the apartment, saying that she couldn't stand being by herself.
So, there were no sightings, just lots of sound and odd things happening.
By the way, I've been studying parapsychology for more than 40 years and am not one to leap to conclusions as they seem to on some of these TV series. When I told someone about this later, she said, "Did you ever think that's why the family never stayed home much?" Oh my! I never thought about that!

I haven't seen one but I've been in the presence of one. Also, I was taking a picture of a castle in Germany two years ago and when I looked at the picture, there was a shadowy figure prominently in the photograph that looked like a man riding a horse. I showed it to the person I was with right away and we both agreed it looked like I had somehow taken a picture of a ghost! My mother has seen a spirit. It was not a ghost in the often-thought of form. She thinks it was actually her guardian angel. It came to her right before she was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. It didn't speak but it somehow conveyed the idea to her that everything was going to be ok. She didn't know what it's visit was all about until she received the diagnosis.

I have had several strange encounters. Once at my Grandma's house where I heard the footsteps she always talked about come halfway down the stairs and stop. Then they went back up. I was too scared to open my eyes. Then once at my old house when I was younger something walked into my room, stood over my bed, while breathing heavily. Again, I was too scared to open my eyes. Then my Mom and I were sitting on the front porch one summer night. There was no one in the house. The living room light was on shining through the big picture window we had. On the banisters of the porch we saw a shadow of a man pull back the curtains and look out the window. I turned around to look at the window and saw the curtains moving as if someone had just pulled them back and released them. I wanted to go inside but Mom wouldn't let me saying someone was in the house. I said, " But we know no one is in there." Then my Dad came home and he went inside and searched the entire house and didn't find anyone. There are more experiences but I don't want to leave you a novel. LOL.

I was in the abandoned at the time George Washington's Headquarters Farm in Heartsville, Pa. I had just come down from upstairs and was looking around downstairs. There was only one way in and it was visible from where I was at so I knew no one had come in. But I heard someone or something walking around upstairs. And my hair went up on the back of my neck. I left right away. I didn't see anything. But it sure scared the He** out of me. The farm was abandoned at the time because someone was actually using it for apartments before the government took it over.
