you ask a very good question ! ! !
I sit here trying to figure out a way f saying this , without seeming like a gun toating freak!
in its simplest form , the answer could well be yes..providing you dont get caught having it!
like all laws its legal to do what you want till you get caught !
this question is like asking is it legal to speed where and when ever you want? the answer to this is still yes , till you get caught , but the right answer is "NO"!! See most peopl e think they have to get somewhere as fast as the car will go, till they wreck or get caught.
The laws for owning guns are brought about by a few to own the rest of us! The lessons learned from WW2 are now gone and have been for a long time!
You can buy a legal weapon in this country and make it an automatic (or have it done for you ) . this is still a legal weapon! till its fired! then and only then is not legal anymore!
our laws now are so warped , that only someone with the know how can warp a law into anything they want and get away with it!
for instance , if i or you shot someone in the face we would be put in jail for a long time , but on the other hand it has been done by someone in our own government and that person is still free as if it never happened! Where are the laws there? does that mean that some laws are only good for a few and the rest can just go to H**L?
Perception is the key as to the answer you are searching for , you did not say that you (or someone you know) were picked up and arrested for owning such a weapon, and you did not say how it was discovered either ....you did not say how it was or when or where it was purchased??
so in answer to your question , for the simple every day person that doesnt stand a chance in a court room . the answer is 'NO" ! !

Private ownership of fully automatic AK rifles is tightly regulated by the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934. The Gun Control Act of 1968 ceased importing of foreign-manufactured fully automatic firearms for civilian sales and possession, effectively halting further importation of civilian accessible AK rifles.
In 1986, an amendment to the Firearm Owners Protection Act stopped all future domestic sales of fully automatic weapons for civilian use (non-military/non-LEO). Fully automatic weapons are still manufactured in the US for military and law enforcement use. However, automatic firearms manufactured domestically prior to 1986 or imported prior to 1968 may be transferred between civilians in accordance with federal and state law. Several Soviet and Communist Chinese rifles made it into the U.S. during the mid-1960s, when returning Vietnam veterans brought them home after capture from enemy troops. Many of these were properly registered during the 1968 NFA amnesty.

Phone the police, and ask them. Don't rely on what amateurs tell you. For my part, there is no reason for a law-abiding citizen to own an assault rifle.
