Speculation is mounting that prosecutors in the Madeleine McCann case want to secure more items from the family as they continue to hunt for evidence against them.

There are claims that British police are preparing to seek possessions from Kate and Gerry McCann, on behalf of the Portuguese authorities, though the force in their home county, Leicestershire, has said it is not aware of any such request.

Surely, you can now see that most of these stories are speculation and just that and nothing else? Everything that you are reading has come from the Portuguese media and has been fed to our reporters. If our police say that they have no such request then what other untruths have been fed to the media just to sell papers?

This is a modern day witch hunt and we are allowing a foreign entity to invade our views with speculations and conspiracies that they are feeding to our media as they know that the British people do accept trial by media and we don't let justice run it's course.

Some of the answers on here are fine examples of this.

Yes they left their children in the apartment. They didn't use the babysitting service but as pointed out before, that service was just a listening service and not somebody sitting in the room with the children. The holiday complex is like a small village and most of the guests did exactly what the McCanns did. They all took turns to listen outside the rooms where the children were sleeping. This is what the babysitting service would of done as well.

One report claims that there were a few blood specks. Then it was hair in the boot and then it was hair in the tyre well and then it was body fluids. These speculations just keep on coming. Surely, until our police make an official annoucement we are just going on reports from the Portuguese media and nothing else.

The Portuguese police have played a very clever game. The McCanns are not allowed to speak to the media as they have been made formal suspects but the PJ have leaked snippets out and they have made sure that the people of the UK get these snippets as they know that we will judge them on it.

This is trial by media and not trial by damming evidence. Ask yourself this? If they had all the evidence that they claimed they had - why not charge them there and then? Why let them leave the country? You don't leave the gate open to let the bull leave the field.

The PJ have achieved what they wanted. Even if they are innocent they have tarnished the McCanns and that family will have that hanging over their heads for the rest of their lives.

I've not forgotten about Maddie. I still have posters on my windows. I've sent posters to my friends in Australia, Britsh Columbia & France. That little girl is on my mind all the time. I want to see her returned home, reunited with her family. I hope that she is alive in some remote part of Spain. It's so easy to cross the border. How do I know this? - I've done it plenty of times myself. There is always HOPE as I don't want to believe that she is dead. Don't ever tell me I have forgotten Maddie.

geri - don't turn this around and play the racism card. Why would you want to do that? Racism does not come in to it. It's about justice, truth, faith & hope

Something I read made it clear just how much the Portuguese police may be trying to 'solve' Madeleine's disappearance by conveniently blaming it on the parents.

I was under the impression the latest forensic evidence was collected by the British police, but the Times On-Line said that the quality of evidence gives great cause for concern because the DNA is being analysed in the U.K. but its staff have played no part in collecting the material they are testing.
This would likely make the evidence worthless due to the risk of contamination by all the people who have had possible contact with the evidence. As we are all no doubt aware by now, collecting DNA is not something just any policeman can do without great risk of improper collection methods.

Sorry, the McCanns may be guilty of negligence, but I still don't believe they are responsible for Maddies disappearance. At least not today........should stop reading the papers till all the evidence is in and a decision has been made whether to charge them or not.

It was reported this morning and as the UK government have already said they would give every assistance to Portugal in this legal case, the police in Leicestershire will comply.
There is a warrant being issued by the court in Portugal which will be honoured in this country under the new European implements, which the UK is signed up to, including fast track style extraditions if necessary. The warrant will ask for certain items which the police in the UK should recover for them and aid in any way with the investigation. As the charges will be serious ones, probably manslaughter, it is very unlikely that the UK would want to be possibly prosecuted for impeding the course of a European criminal investigation.
Surely it would be better for all parties involved for a lot of the investigation to be carried out here by our own super efficient police. Then there can be no cries of a frame up or "any stone unturned."
Will you believe it when you see it?

I'm Portuguese and yes the newspapers have a lot of speculation but the British newspapers are mighty on that, and that's general knowledge in every country they are the same just make one exception about reporters and that is Mr Michael Moore who make a search and research for the true story.
Having said this:
Who did call SKY News (not Portuguese company) in first place instead of calling the Police?
Who's feeding the British Media? Portuguese media or Kate McCann? or both?
British media said and wrote more in favour of the McCann's than against... make sense that the source is the one you referred to?
I let the people here to make they're thinking following that Mr JT have a good good point.
With this I'm not saying they are guilty I have a daughter and just wanted for the girl to be OK and happy.

The British Government in-concert with the British Police and legal system would do an immeasurable long overdue service to the UK nation as a whole if they sat down and explained in simple terms the law as it stands in Portugal, the law in the UK, the divergences, and what, as it currently stands in concert with Portuguese law, as indeed the Portuguese police are stringently obliged to abide by, does it currently amount to!

To me its public and media trial with everyone jumping on the bandwagon to condemn people with no appended proof whatsoever.

Yes. We all want to see justice. Albeit correctly and pain stakingly built up, of undoubted substance and as such gainfully and unhesitatingly prov-en at law!

What have we endured, a complete travesty of events and the most pity full display of media and public behavior the UK has ever witnessed.

Albeit proved innocent, at the end of the day the McCain's will forever be proclaimed otherwise due to the undeniable hostile and vindictive attitudes of press and public.

Stand back - shut up - let full unimpeded justice takes it course. Where is Britain's sense of justice in what we see.

SOME of what we are reading comes from the Portuguese, yes. A LOT comes from the McCann family and connections. Personally I think it would do Gerry and Kate McCann a lot of good if they told their people to shut the he0k up!!! If it is truly illegal to impart information about police matters, maybe they and the Portuguese press ought to be given 7 days without the option /

Personally, I'm fed up with being treated like a mushroom .lol

the press do like to push a police enquiry to meet there own agenda so it won't surprise me if Portuguese authorities give in and make such a request but I just hope the police enquiry doesn't become driven solely by the presses agenda and ignore other lines of enquires, for example who else hired that hire car that blood stains were found in as it could just be a coincide that the MaCanns hired the same car the kidnapper hired(also check to see if any Portuguese media hired the same car as I wouldn't put it pass them to plant the blood even though that’s as unlikely to happen as the MaCanns killing their daughter but stranger things happen) and also check how old the blood is and confirm whether the blood was there before or at the same time the macanns hired it, but the press normally get their way so the MaCanns will have a long road ahead of them and I wish them the best of luck on it:o)

Yet another xenophobic rant!!!!

It was the Leicestershire police and the UK forensic science service that got the evidence!! There was sufficient evidence against Kate very early on for the British police to obtain warrants to monitor their telephone and emails. The evidential requirement is very strong in the UK!!!!!

The Portuguese police have said nothing they are not allowed to by law. The current information has come from the prosecutors!!!

The vast majority of all the information out there including the stuff against the McCann's is actually coming from the McCann family and friends. If they had kept their mouths shut very little would be circulating about them!!!

But sadly you and those like you are detracting from the hunt for Madeleine. Making the McCanns a cause celeb is focusing all the attention on them.

Sad that you can abandon poor Maddie!!!!

Does this mean that if the Police do arrive at the McCann's door at the request of the Portuguese Police you will accept that some (perhaps not all) of the information coming out of Portugal is based on facts and not speculation?

If that is the case then lets just sit back and see what happens.

Yip, the media are cashing it in with this story, speculation or not, everyone wants to keep up with the mccann story right to the bitter end.
What possessions would the Portuguese authorities want anyway, apart from Kate's diary and Maddie's cat, surely if this was the case then they would have taken every damn thing the mccanns had taken with them to Portugal not wait until they returned to England and then want possessions that weren't even at the scene.

This case has been media hype from day one.

Good, if it achieved the right result and the child was found alive and well.

Bad, if it involved innocent people and let the real culprit gain time to cover tracks.

GOOD, GOOD, GOOD for newspaper sales and that for Press is what is all about at the end of the day.
