well wizards are generally thought of as kind-looking, soft, a bit big around the waist etc.. like a nice old or something... take Santa for example... another is the Wizard of Oz..
(some others who aren't exactly fat are Gandalf, Dumbledore etc.)
Witches on the other hand haven't been depicted exactly well all the time... for example the witch in Hansel and Gretel (i think it was a witch anyway)...
As far as the psychological aspect is concerned, witches "sound" bad... the "z" in wizard helps save that lot (as it kinda gives a "zing" to the word) but "witch" has got "tch" which feels a bit like spitting out the word...
So which witch wished which wicked wish?

I think because we associate witches with spells, curses, etc., which are all negative. Wizards on the other hand are more traditionally associated with wonder, fantasicm, and yes spells, but the good kind. In addition, wizards are associated with some kind of divine entitlement, while witches are associated with having been damned.

because we're exposed to scary witches in films and stuff ( like the wicked witch of the west, hansell and gretal etc) and only jovial, jolly old wizards like Merlin and Gandalf.
they just aren't enough scary wizards to give them a bad rep

witches are known to be mean but wizards are usually nice with only a few mean ones

how would you know the difference?
thinking of witches as evil is a negative stereotype. haven't you hear of the good witch of the north?
but I think it's because we don't have evil wizards running around at Halloween.

witches tend to kidnap children and put them in the cook pot. wizards usually go for much more exotic ingredients so likely are just out for a midnight stroll.
