It depends how much the Yankees lose. If they lose more, then Boston doesn't need to win as many.

To account for both of these factors, sports journalists use a term called the "magic number." Look at the MLB standings on Yahoo Sports, and you'll see that the magic number for Boston is 12. This can be any combination of Red Sox wins and Yankee losses that adds up to 12. If the Red Sox win 6 and the Yankees lose 6 before the end of the season, Boston wins the division. If the Red Sox only win one but the Yankees lose 11, Boston wins the division.

Assuming that the Yankees win every game in the 17 games they have left in the regular season which is unlikely, but good, the Red Sox will have to win 12 times in the 15 games they have left. Assuming that this is not the case, a combination of Yankee losses and Red Sox wins that equal 12 means that the Red Sox clinch the AL East.

It is reflected in the form of a "magic number" which is a combination of Red Sox wins and/or the Yankees losing. The Red Sox are 89-58 right now and the Yankees are 83-62 and the "magic number" is 12. Any combination of games won by the Red Sox and game lost by the Yankees that reach the number 12 will give the Red Sox the division title.

As of today, if the yankees win the rest of their games, the Sox need 12 wins. Any combination of Red Sox wins and Yankee losses that total 12 will give the Sox the division.
