or give it to the police to return it? Be honest here. I would return it without taking out any money.

I'll look for an ID and return it to the owner (without taking anything). If I don't know about the owner, I'll take it to the police.

In my current situation, I would return it, but in my own way.

First, I would write to the address on the ID in the wallet. If I received no response (I would include my non-personal email and my work phone number, no address though) after 2 weeks, I would turn it in to the police, along with photocopies of not only the letter, but of the sealed envelope WITH a postmark on it, and pictures (with a timestamp) of everything that was in it, so that they would know there was no dishonesty.

I think if no one claims it after...90 days?...it is returned to you, but I'm not sure.

I'm not going to lie - there was a point where I was so broke that all of my money was going to keeping a roof over my head. If there had been $500 in a wallet, I would have taken $20 to keep myself fed for a while, and then given it to the police anonymously (spelling?) so that even if the person wanted to give a reward, they couldn't...I know that it's dishonest, but I was in a very desperate spot at that time and I know it's what I would have done - I wouldn't have set anyone back very far (karma, you know)...but I would have taken a little.

Now, though, I would do as I said before.

Show a wallet in which you can stack a TON of money(any denomination) and I will tell you the phone number of the nearest crane station for hoisting the wallet.Police can wait for the time being.

i suppose return. but is your police corrupted?? if so, might as well hang on to it for awhile and decide best way to return.
once i found $100. waited for 20mins no one came around. went for appt, came back for another 10mins - nothing. it went to a charity box! - animal charity too!!
i'm thinking if i need the $$, maybe i shld use it after a lapse of 99days. why 99? i dunno. at end of 99, then i decide.

I'd return it. Unless it belonged to someone like Paris Hilton.

If there was Identification in it, ABSOLUTELY. If not, I would try to put up fliers where I found it and ask for SPECIFIC information about the wallet, how much money, etc.

depends where i found the wallet.

in public place, i dont trust police, so i'll keep half to myself, and give half to the church to ease my conscience.

in private place, i just give it to the authority.
