Story problems help people understand practical ways that math helps them everyday. Visualizing the situation is the skill you want to develop. Then the math is easy!
"See" the situation. Read the rules. Pretend you are Sherlock Holmes trying to solve a mystery. Act as if you are a juror who must accurately determine the truth based ONLY on the information you have.
This example is a specific type of question involving "time" and "Motion."
First... Disregard all irrelevant information; for instance, the name of the person who is traveling or "in motion." It also is unimportant "who" Alecia is visiting or why she might be compelled to go. Reduce the problem to its barest essential facts.
Second... Visualize the trip. For a simplified problem like this one, you can imagine a trip that is a straight line; like a ruler or yardstick.
Third... establish grid coordinates; the starting and stopping points. In this case the starting point can be called 'Zero', just like the imaginary end of your yardstick. The destination is in some arbitrary common unit of distance; "Miles" in this case. However, be aware that the distance could be in ANY unit of measurement and could be converted to any other unit!
Fourth... Establish the other variable; in this case, "speed."
Because the question is simplified to "average speed" you can assume that it is the only information you need. In real life, speed is affected by stopping, starting and acceleration. This problem ignores such extra variables for the sake of simplicity and clarity. This type of "mental averaging" is intuitive and natural for most real-world situations.
Fifth...Convert variables to common units... In this case, you do not have to convert anything because the speed is given in "Miles per hour" and the distance is given in "miles" ...a similar unit of measurement.
Now all you have to do is divide the distance by the speed. That gives the time.
Think of it this way:
Distance, Divided by Speed, equals Time
D / S = T
163 / 55 = ?
A very helpful trick is to round up or down so that you can easily check the "ballpark" answer against your calculator.
If it helps, imagine the same division problem in some other unit that you feel comfortable with... say, ...money!
Imagine you have to give change equal to $1.63 (One dollar and sixty-three cents.)
Traveling 55 MPH is like a fifty-cent piece plus a nickel.
163 miles is like a dollar and sixty three cents.
You can round up or down to the nearest unit to make the numbers easy.
Three half-dollars equals One dollar and fifty cents.
Three nickels equals fifteen cents.
Add those two amounts together, $1.50 + .15 cents = $1.65
1.65 is exactly like 163 miles, except without the decimal and plus two cents. ( "Cent" is the root word for "Century" and means "Hundred."
By converting to familiar units and rounding to easy units, you can quickly see if your "ballpark" intuition "fits" or "agrees with" the actual result.
So, in my hasty "money analogy," I used a simple small number (3), times familiar easy units (50 cent pieces and nickels) to "feel out" the answer.
I now KNOW that my actual accurate answer should be somewhere near "three!"
OK... Do the work, either with pencil and paper or calculator.
163 miles (divided by) 55 equals what?
These simplification tricks and unit-conversion techniques are elementary to real-life situations. By using them daily over a period of time, you get comfortable with them. They become like friends that help you whenever you need help. You just have to "hang out" with these friends just like your real friends. unlike some people though, these friends will NEVER let you down!
I sincerely hope this helps you!
Best Wishes!

163 divided by 55 gives you exact.
So it is about 3 hours, as 3hours x 55 m/hr = 165 miles

They drive at 55 miles an hour (60 mins), so therefore
55 miles ----- 60 mins
163 miles ----- ? mins
Take 60 divided by 55, times 163, which will give you 177.8 mins (corrected to 1 decimal place)
60 mins ----- 1 hour
177.8 mins ----- 3.0 hours (corrected to 1 decimal place)
It should take them 3 hours to get there.
