I was asking a friend about what pain killers she found helpful with her back pain recently as I was about to go back to the doctor for the third time for stronger pain killers for my period. She said that my symptoms sounded exactly like endometriosis and I should get it checked out immediately because it could effect my fertility. Everyone I've talked to since has known what it is and has sounded really worried but I've never even heard of it before! I've just been given a referel to a GYN but I don't even know what he/she is going to be looking for, and I'm frickin scared because I don't want to be misdiagnosed. I also really want kids and don't know how much this could effect my fertility. Has any one got some basic advice without the complicated doctor language so I can understand whats actually happening pleas

It is abnormal growth of the uterine lining. Usually, outside of the uterus. I wouldnt freak too much, it is not uncommon and there are lots of treatments available. My sis in law had it severely and she conceived and they have a beautiful 2 yr old now. Best wishes.

ENDOMETRIOSIS: SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
1) painful menstruation-- pain may begin before and extend several days after a period
2) occasional heavy periods
3) sharp pain in your pelvis during intercourse
4) infertility
5) pain when straining to have a bowel movement.
SERIOUSNESS:
Endometriosis implants are rarely maglignant, but they are frequently associated with infertility. Although the symptoms may wax and wane, they often get worse with time.
try going to www.ask.com and type in what is Endometriosis and it will tell you all you want to know. Good luck and best wishes. Go to the doctor and get it checked out the sooner the better. My Mom had to have a hysterectomy because of it.

basically when you have your period you sheed tissue, this tissue is ment to come out when you have your period but sometimes it goes else where in the body.
I have endometriosis, and I have had it since I was 15, im 21 and i have just had surgery to remove the endo
basically when people talk about it effecting your fertility is when the tissue makes its way on to your overys and cant be removed or has basically damaged the overy's so you cant have children anymore.i was lucky and did not get it on the overys but sadly the gyno could not remove all my endo because it was soo small and i still live with the pain, passing out and bad back pains and pain killers do nothing.
the surgery i had was key hole surgery where they burnt the endo they did find.
its a day surgery, sadly i may have to the surgery again but will be going on to a injections program for 6months to try kick start my cycle again wit no endo.
the gyno will basically do an internal examination, to feel for pain, ask you lots of questions, if the gyno thinks you have it, you will more then likly be referred to have surgery.

The endometrium is the inside lining of the uterus. Endometriosis is when this tissue is located outside of the uterus. If it is endometriosis and it's left untreated your friend is right it can cause infertility. Your Dr. will probably do a pelvic exam and mine did an ultrasound and ask you questions about your symptoms. I hope that helps.

starryeyed is right about what it is...but your friend is right that you need to get checked right away b/c it can & often does cause infertility. It can get so bad you'd need a hysterectomy to remove it all. My family member was diagnosed with an advanced case & had to have a hysterectomy @ age 22. She was lucky she had her son & daughter @ a young age or she would be childless.
Go to the doctor(gyn) right away to get an accurate diagnosis of whatever the problem is.

Basically it is when the cells that line the uterus walls spread up through the falopian tubes and into the surounding areas.

It can cause painful periods and if left untreated can cause infertillity.

I have attached a link to a nice, clear site.
