For the past month I have had painful nipples and sore breasts when I wake up. I sleep on my back and side. The nipples are not inverted and not usually erect. The pain subsides after about a half an hour. The other day I laid down for a nap for an hour and I had stabbing pain in my left nipple and breast that woke me up. I can find very little about bilateral breast/nipple pain on the internet, everything is related to breastfeding. Has anyone experienced this? I have a diagnostic mammogram next week.

It sounds hormonal, possibly peri-menopause.

When did your mother reach menopause? If it was in early to mid 40's then this is probably what it is.

It is good you are having a mammogram, and aren't panicking about cancer. Breast caner is rarely painful and so this is not likely.

You arent pregnant right? It sounds like hormone surges. Are you pre-menopausal or menopausal?

Why don't you go to a doctor?
