I, too, love "Legend". It was complete escapism for Tom Cruise in this role; he really took it to heart. I think it's especially good because later people are too conscious of the star and what's going on in his life.
I agree with "War of the Worlds", too. I was prepared to dislike this, but I was extremely impressed with all of it, including Cruise's performance. I think it demanded more from him than most roles he has had. I approached it ready to disapprove and be disgusted, but the film really changed my attitude.
He's delightful in "Cocktail"! He and Bryan Brown are wonderful together. They're both so energetic and vital, and the glass and bottle juggling is amazing! I watched this one again just recently and liked it more than ever.
"Risky Business" brought him a lot of attention, and the film is a classic in its genre, rising above most teen escapade movies. No one who has seen it will forget THE scene in which he celebrates having the house to himself.
It's a tiny role for him, but I have to mention "The Outsiders", which demonstrates that he could do ensemble work and not "hog" a scene.
