what happened was i got a ticket for expired plates on my car, but i was on my way to a safety inspection. so i go to court for this to fight it and i don't think it is going to be that big of deal, but then when i talk to the prosocuter she says i can either pay the fine or come back with my registration and it will be dismissed. so i said whatever and talked to the judge to get a new court date and he tells me that even if its dismissed i will still have to pay the court costs of $60. i don't think this is right because if your offence was dismissed then that means your not guilty and i don't think you should have to pay any thing, but they acted like no matter what that you still have to pay court costs.

also now i am not going to be able to get my registration in time, but i don't think that should matter cause i don't think what i did was anything wrong, i mean how else are you supposed to get to a safety inspection without driving there?

lawyers only please.

i'm not talking about my case, but in the case of murder like robert talked about where as you have to pay for the jury and all if you are found inocent is just stupid. if you really didn't do something and are found not guilty then i don't think its right that they expect the inocent person to pay for their mistake. if anything they should pay you, for wasting your time. the way i look at it, if they got it right the first time then you wouldnt even be involved. i'm not talking about OJ, he did it and should have to pay. he just bought his way off.

and im tired of people answering questions just to say something rude. if you don't know about the law then keep your opinions to yourself. i asked for lawyers so that i can get some accurate feedback.

P.S. i got the ticket in St. Charles, MO if that helps at all.

I live on the other side of this state, and its no different. They make up laws as they need them....get away w/ it a couple of times, then they think it really is law, all for the purpose of money....chances are its not legal.....
I know its not in Calif...............

You still owe the court costs because if the judge dismisses the case it doesn't mean that you did nothing wrong, it just means that the court was unsuccessful in or decided not to prosecute you. The violation still occurred, and the court still incurred a cost (the prosecutors time, and the judges time when you were in court)

it's just the way the system works. A better one is if you a charged with murder, and are found not guilty you still have to pay for the jury! Roughly $20 per day, per person... Think about what OJ had to pay in court costs alone!?!?!

To answer your question about "how to get your car to the safety inspection" - well you take the car before the inspection runs out or if that is not possible you have the car towed to the garage you are planning to use.

A car with improper and/or expired tags is illegal to operate - plain and simple. In choosing to drive the car you violated the law, irregardless of the reasons. You are being asked to cover court cost because the court is offering to waive your fine for breaking the law if you correct the problem - but in the process of granting this waiver you still of your own accord have taken up valuable court time in an already congested system, and are being asked to pay for that time.

I am not a lawyer, but that is the law in your state. You broke the law by driving with expired plates. The reason why is not important. Driving in all states is a privilege not a right. Be smart and either pay the ticket with court costs or take the deal and pay the court costs.
Ask the prosecutor if there is a way for you to drive your car to the inspection place and the license plate place.

This is, in my opinion, one of the glaring problems with the US legal system. Unless the law specifically says otherwise, each party must pay for their own court costs. In most other countries of the world, the loser reimburses court costs for the winner.

It is one thing if you are actually guilty and they dismiss the case and you pay court cost.
But it is quite another if you are innocent and required to pay court cost.
Obviously, being innocent should mean you DO NOT pay court cost.
This Is pure common sense that all of us should fight to have upholded.
We need to force every type of system to pass the COMMON SENSE RULE.
