The "uprights" are the two sides of the goal posts (dates back to when most goal posts where H's rather than Y's).

As such splitting the uprights is the ball being kicked somewhere between the left and the right goal posts. Typically, this is used by commentators to indicate a successful field goal or point after touchdown.

kicking he ball in between the goal posts as each post satnds upright so when u kick the ball in between them u have split the uprights
