I have maybe 20 true friends, and I am 27. By true friends, I mean people who I can trust to turn to in a crisis. People who would help me if I were all of a sudden broke, homeless or in some trouble. They are mostly older than me. 40ish.

WOW! This is a deep & difficult question, especially coming from an 18-year-old. Thanks for making us all take stock.
I'm 33. If you had asked me that 6 weeks ago, the # would have been in the single digits, but my mom passed away a little over a month ago & some people have really surprised me some in bad ways, but most in good ways. I KNOW without a doubt that A LOT of people love me & A LOT of people loved my mom. A true friend is there for you when times are tough. My mom & I were very close, so times don't get much tougher! I have a hard time relying on others, because like you I'm been burned more than once. You can't let it cut you off from others, because then the person taht hurt you has that much more power over you. I'm going to say the # for me of people I KNOW I can count on must be in the 50 - 75 range & they are of ALL shapes, sizes, genders, & ages. The #1 friend I can rely on is Jesus Christ.

I have four close, dear friends. One is a 62 year old man, he is a very good person, he says a prayer for everyone and spends a lot of time each night doing this. He is married to my best friend who is 52. She lives in a nursing home and has multiple sclerosis. She has compassion for everyone and can't stand to hear someone talk bad about someone else, she is the bravest person I know. Then there's Rob, we've been friends for 21 years, I trust him with my life. He makes me laugh like no one else. We were boyfriend-girlfriend 21 years ago, it didn't work out. He is the same age as I am -41. Then there is John, we almost got married twenty three years ago. I had the sense to call it off, it would have ruined us, we could not have been friends today, we would have divorced. He is the smartest person I know and always has an answer for any question I have. He is republican war hawk turned hippie, go figure. He is 41 like myself. I am beyond blessed to have these people in my life.

I feel sorry for people with one or 2 true friends. Life must be sad when you trust so few people and can only related to a handful of people. There are more good people in the world then bad, and you just gotta put yourself out there without fear or being burned or screwed over. Restricting your friends doesn't help you, it hurts.

I am 21, most of the people I consider "friends" are the ones I would trust with my life(of which there are about a dozen or so) everyone else is just considered a pal or buddy.

I have 1 true friend that she and I have been best friends for 4 years. I have quite a few other really close friends, but she is my true, best friend. I’ve come to the conclusion that I only need one best friend (although I do need other friends too) that will stick with me forever. :)
