With the cost of a good set of tires it would be senseless not to use them up. That said be sure to replace them right away since they will not be able to displace water well enough to be safe at that point and hydroplaning on a bike is a bit scary.

Past the wear bars and water dispersion suffers in the rain since the channels are too small to carry the water. Also keep in mind that whether you're talking cars or bikes, 90% of the flats occur in the last 10% of the tread. As for the fellow running it until the cord shows, all it takes is a tiny piece of flint (from gravel roads) or a little bitty nail to go clear through. With lots of tread left, the object may impale itself into the tire but is nowhere close to the carcass or the air inside.

I went way past the wear bars. It was a nerve racking feeling to find no traction when I needed it the most. I will never let them go that far again!!

Sometimes when money is short I do but it isn't a good idea. My Kawasaki 550 is showing the wear bars but payday it gets replaced.

Past the wear bars. I don't start getting nervous until there is almost no tread left.

Money was short for me also. I just ran one to the last 10%. I got a flat. limped home as 15mph for about 8 miles. I was sweating out screwing up my rim but the tire held just enough pressure to keep it alright.

Yes, and beyond. I ride them 'til the cops pull me over and tell me that my tires are obviously bald.

no. i replace my tires when they've reached half of original tred depth. i've found the traction dramatically changes for the worse when they get past that.
