Magnesium turns into magnesium oxide (a white powder) when it burns. Since this powder has virtually no vapor pressure I don't think there would be much odor produced when burning Mg (maybe if there was some contamination on it like oils from handleing etc. there might be a slight odor). If you had your nose right over the burning magnesium so you were snorting the white fume/powder maybe there would be some odor but I have never tried this!

I don't know if other people can smell it but yes it does. I have a very very sensitive nose and can smell things people don't smell at all.
