Um...did Iran violate international law by invading Iraq?

Common Sense, isn't the United States interfering in Iraq *slightly* more than Iran?

open4one, if the UN had wanted Bush to invade, it would have authorized his war.

Verdeojos, I would call invading a country a form of interfering with it. Wouldn't you?

JustAskin, I know this: the best way to "get home sooner" is to admit a civil war is inevitable once we leave. And then get home now.

Well, it IS in character. Saudi Arabia condones slavery with kidnapped American girls serving some of the Saud and Bin Ladin families as sex slaves, and they are our "friends". They had more to do with 9/11 than Iraq, but we didn't invade them, we gave them U.S. built printing presses, paper and ink so they can make the best counterfeit U.S. currency in the world, and they are our allies.

I love it when people say the US invaded Iraq to enforce UN resolutions. They are same people who say the UN should be abolished, and who ignore the fact that in March, 2003, Bush kicked out the UN weapons inspectors who had been having great success in NOT find evidence of a nuclear program or WMD.

To answer your question, there are many sur-realities. Iran has legitimate AND illegitimate interests in being in Iraq. No country likes having anarchy on its borders and no country is thrilled at the prospect of accepting thousands of political refugees each year. Imagine how the US would react to political chaos in Mexico.

Iran also has a religious interest; it is a great shame and dishonor for a Muslim nation to be occupied by Christian foreigners, and Iraq has many sites which are holy to Muslims. Iran also has an ethnic interest; thousands of Arabs live in Iran, and thousands of Persians live in Iraq. In fact, The principal religious leader of the Iraqi Shiites, Grand Ayatollah Sistani, is an Iranian. So even though Iran's leaders may have hegemonic and "evil" intentions they are also motivated by a need for a safe neighborhood, and these considerations can be great basis for working with Iran to bring stability to Iraq.

I agree the US likely violated more international laws than Iran has, but now that the US is policing Iraq, both the US and Iran have a common interest in restoring order there. Whether conservatives want to admit this or not, the US will have to negotiate with Iran at some point. Cons need to look at this from the other guys' side for a moment, and think about saving human lives instead of squandering them.

When the US invaded Iraq, we did so for a great many reasons. Iraq was in violation of numerous UN resolutions. And continued to be a threat to it's people. And the fact is that the people of Iraq are much better off without Saddam. Iran hasn't actually invaded Iraq, all it's doing is supporting the insurgency. .Iran is attempting to destabilize the legitimate government of Iraq, for it's own purposes, which probably have to do with the long feud between the two nations.

Edit: The reason the UN Security Council didn't authorize the war is because France and Russia had long term business contracts with the government of Saddam. And China just likes to be difficult.

Last month, General Pervez Musharraf told Wolf Blitzer that Iran is “cooperating” with Pakistan in their operations against al Qaeda and the Taliban. During the same week Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri Malaki said that Iraq and Iran have “good” relations and that Iran is helping in the fight against al Qaeda.

Thank you for having the wisdom and courage to ask this question. It is one of the more intelligent ones I have seen all night and yes, it is surreal to hear the US accusing Iran of "Interfering in Iraq." But hey that's the old game of projection and when was the last time the US DID NOT INTERFERE. in the affairs of another country to advance its own interests.

The reason that people say this is because Iran has really poor intentions with regards to Iran. This is one of the issues with trying to withdraw troops. Iran plans to invade Iraq at its weakest, and this interference poses a problem with trying to handle the problems over there. It makes sense if you have any idea what you are talking about and you use logic.

Hypocritical would be a more appropriate word considering USA put Saddam in power in the first place to counter the Ayatollah control over the region or lets be truthful the oil.

You really gotta know the deal there. You don't. It's late. I don't have time right now, but man, when I have time, I'll try to teach you how Iran is messing with the whole Iraq/US thing over there. If they had nothing to do with it, we would loose fewer soldiers, Iraq would rebound faster, and we would get home sooner. Iraq is helping to support insurgents who are blowing up a lot of **** and killing a lot of people.
We have freed millions of people who were living in tyranny. They have a chance for a future now that they never had before. Easy? No way, man. Not for us, not for them. Worth it. Well, why should we take your word for it? Go ask a few of them.... Go ahead. I'll wait here til you get back.

By then, you will see what I'm sayin and you won't ask dumb questions..... sorry, man, not your fault. you didn't know, right?
