I'm nearly 28 weeks pregnant and had an ultrasound at 12 weeks then one at 21 weeks.

Is there usually another one before the baby is born?
If so what is it they look for most? Can they tell if the cord is around the neck and if the baby is engaged until birth.

My 1st child was born face up why wasn't this picked up until his head came out?

Sorry for so many questions, your answers are appreciated :)

They usually only due a later term ultrasound if the baby is measuring big or small or if they are worried about complications things of that nature but most drs don't do one unless necessary.

As for being born face up they really can't tell that every time. Both my boys were face up and they didn't know that either and my 2nd son had a cord around his neck and that was a surprise too. They just prepare for anything becomes you never know what can happen.

More than likely they will do another one when your close to your due date to see how big your baby is and confurm the possition of the baby. Yes they can see the cord on the ultrasound so they would more than likely be able to see if it is around the babies neck. The reason they didn't pick up on your baby being face up is because as your baby descends into your pelvis and down the birth canal it turns and you can't really tell which way they are going to turn before hand. Hope that helps.

I think that is usually all of the ultrasounds. \

They check the brain, spine (for spina bifida), lips (for cleft palate and downs) kidneys, look to see if it is a boy or girl, check the heart, and they usually try to get a few cute shots for the parents to take home for the baby book.

The baby can move a lot, so they can flip over after the ultrasound. That is probably why they dont bother. THey also cant do too much about a baby being sunny side up except try to turn him.
My daughter had the cord around her neck. Lots of babies do. It didn't even phase the doctor. She just pulled it up and unwrapped it.

Hmmm... I wonder if that explains her recent obcession with necklaces!

I had my dopper, plus 4 ultrasounds and also got simultaneosly monitored for the baby's heart beat during my last induction. But still they could not tell when my baby went into fetal distress and whn her heart beat dropped. They listened to her fainting heartbeat after 13 hours of lnormal abor and concluded they wld hve to do an emergency c-section as the cord might be tied to th neck. and it was and my baby was born to live only for 27 days.

now i feel whatever has to happen will happen and yes ultrasounds are helpful but noting can be predicted during the time of labor when the kid tries to push himself out of you. That time his postion changes so frequently and i wish docs had some facility of doing US that time, coz it is the most crucial time. But if you are diagnosed with high risk pregnancy like pre-eclampsia, or gestational diabetes, the doc might suggest a third or even a fourth US to monitor the baby's growth and see his biophysical profile. Hope it helps. Dont worry so much, just have faith in God. He is the ultimate decssion maker.

well.. i am 18 weeks pregnant with my second child. my first however i had 4 ultrasounds done.I understood the first 3 ( dating, another dating to be for sure, then the sex of the baby) but the 4th one that i had at around 28 weeks as well i had no idea, when i went to see my ob the week after she had told me that i had placenta perivea (sp?) she also told me that it was very likely for this to change and that it was noticable in my last ultrasound. They also did an ultrasound when i went into labour to make sure that the placenta had shifted and was able to have a natural birth ..witch i did, dont be too worried about an extra ultrasound enjoy it! get a copy of a pic, and keep it for show and ask your doc/midwife any questions you have dont be shy..i hope i was of some help

Your baby probably moved towards your delivery time. It happens, sometimes they do ultrasounds on delivery day, I had one, but not always. You are probably having another US to firm up due dates, there must have been some question as to that.

When Doctors tell you about having these ultrasounds you should ask why they are having them. And yes they can tell if the cord may be restricting the baby in any way or any other dangers.

And no normally there isn't another US but just consider yourself lucky to have so many and be able to see your baby so often!

I only got 1 doctor ordered ultrasound with my pregnancy, the other ones were elective that I had to pay for. The doctor ordered one was at 18 weeks when I found out the sex of the baby.

There won't be any more most likely unless you have problems. I don't want to repeat much, but the nurse has everything right. Don't worry about the cord. It is not very common. They will be able to tell if your baby goes into distress during labor. That's usually the big way they know.

you may have another ultrasound towards the end to check the babies size, but its not usually routine. AS for the baby facing up or down, the dr can't tell that until delivery, but even so there is nothing the can do to flip him, and its not a casue for a c-section.
