I'm asking in reference to the Morrissey song of the same title. A friend of mine says it's the English way of saying you're going to kick someone's butt. This doesn't make sense to me, but my friend is English, so i'm looking for a second opinion to settle this.

It is often used to applicants for a job "we'll let you know" if we decide to offer the job to you. And it is frequently used when they already know they don't want you. I don't know of any case where it is used to mean anything about "kicking someone's butt".

As far as the lyrics to that song go, it probably doesn't matter what "we'll let you know" means, because the rest of the song doesn't make any sense either.

I've always viewed it, in the same way, as when my Mum would say "Maybe".
You're probably being told no but, to avoid a tantrum, you're being given a glimmer of hope.
Even though it's usually false hope.

It means the answer is No. They won't let you know in the future, they are letting you know now that it's no. Especially referring to call backs in the entertainment industry.

I don't think it's about kicking someone's but.

It's usually a polite way, often after you finish a job interview, of saying "sod off and don't come back!" (Go Away!)

"Thank you for applying for the position (not really, I feel like I wasted my time interviewing you, but I'm supposed to be polite and all). We'll let you know .... (I hope somebody else is working that day, I HATE telling people they aren't qualified).

You did not get the job.
