My mom;s good friend did it with her kids, my mom did it with us...so whats the deal with the dark corn syrup in baby bottles? is it just for flavoring? or does it really help with gas, as this is waht I was told by both my mom and my mom's friend

My son is a year old and was breastfed. no where did I say or ask if it was ok to do this in my question. I just wanted to know what the deal was,I was told told me before, but that was like 18 years ago...when we were all still kids and had better things to do than to wonder what the dark stuff in the bottles was...and what brought it up was a conversation with my friend. If I needed to use this remedy to help my child GO, then yes I would. I think I would rather have a little sugar in him than drugs. And a little bit isnt going to cause these dramatic side effects some of you talk about. If your child is diabetic, you are going to know sooner than you would think of dark corn syrup...seems like that would be the farthest thing from my mind.

Any way, thanks to those of you who actually read the question and refreshed my memory

One of my daughters was very constipated as a baby. Corn syrup in her bottle was suggested by the pediatrician. It helped almost immediately.

It's a remedy for constipation. It shouldn't be done on a regular basis--only occasionally if needed. I've never heard that it helps with gas. You could try Mylicon or Gas Relief Drops if you need something for gas. As a side note, if you do need to use corn syrup in a bottle, buy a new bottle of it. Dark corn syrup can grow botulism spores (like honey) when it's old. That's what I was told anyway, and better safe than sorry.

It's pretty common to give corn syrup/apple juice/prune juice for constipation. HOWEVER the amount and practicality depends on the baby's age. There's a HUGE difference between a 9 month old and a 2 month old. For constipation, you can simply apply pressure to the rectum with your finger. I do this with my son, and the next several diapers have more and more poop in them. If your baby's constipation is something you want to fix asap, you could put vaseline on the tip or a q-tip or baby thermometer and insert the very tip into the rectum. Be careful about this because that's a lot of stimulation. I've not tried this myself because other methods worked. I have friends who have done this, and they say it works immediately, so be prepared. Personally, I prefer not giving my son sugar or juice at such a young age, so I use more natural methods.

It is not a good idea to put any corn syrup in any formula or any of baby's food, just as it is not a good idea to give your baby any kind of sugar, sucrose, dextrose, corn syrup solids, dark or light corn syrup, maltose, lactose, etc. Unfortunately there are still manufactured formulas for baby that have corn syrup in them. But there are also more and more children who have diabetes. It is folly. There is no sugar in breast milk and should be none in baby formulas either. If a baby is constipated, which won't happen at all if s/he is breast fed, a tablespoon or so of plums or prunes can help, or you might try fish oil drops in the formula. Both of these things help as much or more than dark or light corn syrup as far as constipation is concerned, and both of these things are far more nourishing to the baby than simple sugars (which corn syrup is).

I did this for my son when he was between 5-9 months. He had a lot of tummy aches and I used Karo syrup with some water and he pooped a lot. It does help with gas and constipation in little ones.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
Gosh this happened in the past. NOT NOW.

Why on earth would a baby need a bunch of sugar in their bottle. It could cause endless health issues.

Be wear of so many people telling you things. Talk to your doctor.

And those of you who said it was ok to do.....where did you get your education? Please don't give out important advice unless you are qualified to do so. It is best to say what you feel then add....check with your doctor.

I can't believe those who gave advice on something so important. !!!!!
I remember my mom and mother in law telling me things that drove me nuts. You need to set boundries and tell them that if you want advice you will ask and that you and the doctor have all things in control.

Don't do it!!! They used to do it "way back then" to help babies with tummy problems. But, in reality babies should not be having anythign but breast milk or formula until they are at least 4 months old. (even though it is better to wait for 6 months)

The digestions of your baby is not ready for anything but the milk.

1] it does not helpwith gas
2] it used to be used for constipation
