Ok. So I went and got a new ink cartridge from Walmart (black) and took my color to refill at Walgreens. I have no color cartridge installed, is this why it won't print? I have a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 842C. I am computer stupid, so your help is appreciated. My son has two papers to print and it is after midnight. Obviously, they are due in the morning. Help! Please tell me there is a way to print without a color cartridge. I only need to print in black, a couple of Word documents. Thanks!!

talanstormrider, thanks for the suggestion. I tried it but it doesn't work. Not your fault, I hate this printer. The stupid cartridges for this thing are $30 for black and $33 for color. It's ridiculous.

Thank you to all of you. I managed to save the stuff to a disk (is that what it is called? I go with plastic square thing). I will print them in the morning. Now I just have to convince my computer programmer husband (he is sleeping through all my drama) that his wife is not the world's most computer illiterate ignoramous when he gets up in the morning!!

If you have the user manual for your printer, you should look in it to see if your printer will print with only one cartridge installed, or look in the troubleshooting section. Here is a link to HP Help for your specific printer:

I think they have live chat support if you can't find the info you seek at the link. I try never to wait until the last moment to do anything on the computer, because it's just my luck to have problems such as yours pop up and foil me! Good luck.

Your printer requires both cartridges in order to work, sorry.

Can you save the documents to either a CD or floppy and then he can print them at school?

This might be nothing at all, but if I were you though I would take him to a doctor right away. You might want to keep watch on him and make sure that he is not pulling out more and more hair. You do not want his hair being pulled out. Let it fall out on its own if it is falling out. Be careful while brushing his hair. Maybe brush it for him. If he doesn't want to go to the doctor then tell him that it would be really embarressing to be 14 years old and have no hair. Explain to him that something is going on. And if I were you I would try to stay calm. Don't let your son know that something could be going on. And as far as you know this might be nothing.. Hang in there and don't give up. ~Hope this helped

the printer needs both to print. the black ink is not the only thing used during plain text printing.

yes, you need both cartridges in order for the printer to function. if it doesn't work, go to a fedexkinkos. they should be 24 hrs. or go back to wallmart and get the color cartridge. it's your only hope......
