My desktop has a Sempron 3100+ processor on a socket 754. Can I change it to an Athlon series processor that uses socket 754. If so what exactly would I have to do or buy. Any help would be appreciated because I really dont want to have to buy a new computer just for a video game.

Check your Motherboard specs. It should list compatible CPUs that go with the board. The socket won't be the problem, and there shouldn't be a problem with just installing a new chip. Still it doesn't hurt to make sure. With what you have to buy, if you just buy a new chip in an AMD package it will have the heatsink and fan with it. Please write me if you have any questions. One thing to remember is to be careful when taking the old chip out. The thermal grease that is on it and the old heatsink acts like a glue so a little twisting to break it free might be in order. I would suggest reading the instruction manual or checking on AMD website for this. Other then that good luck and you should have any problems. What do you hope to gain by making the change? In my experience, upgrading your hard drive or graphics card will give you a lot more noticeable performance improvements. For the hard drive, I'd suggest Western Digital's 150GB Raptor (10,000 RPM) as your system boot drive. For a graphics card, an nVidia 8600 if you're running Vista, otherwise a 7900 card is the way to go.

Go to the motherboard's website and look at what cpus your board supports. Cant give you an answer without knowing what board you have!! If your board will take the new cpu make sure you have at least the bios you need to run it or you'll have to flash your bios with the old cpu before you put the new one in. Also make sure that if you need a certain revision of your board to run the new cpu that you have at least the revision needed.

the highest you can possibly go on ur board is a 4000+ socket 754. they are rare now and if you find one on ebay, they are pricey.
