Won't work, Obama is Democrat, and Lieberman is frustrated with the party not paying attention to him and rather Obama (for obvious reasons). Joe is an illegal candidate too, he was not born here, nor was his family - enough said.
It has always been a joke, he can not sit as a president in this country. And he knows he is not a viable candidate, that is what burns me up on that one. Some of us, that understand this, are not asleep - and would make sure he did not get that seat ever.
This is not Israel, and he and his wife are die-hard Jewish, which is not going to ever be what this country is about. Forget about it. He's a nice man, to a degree. But, then again, don't try to violate my homeland.

Sorry it will never happen. Or not anytime soon. America is too comfortable with bi-party system, and only smaller elections such as mayoral or representative types seem to get away with it. Sometimes in cases such as Lieberman's a Senator or Governor will already have a good position but chooses not to associate themselves with either party.
It is definitely a hope of mine that someday elections would no longer be Democrat vs. Republican, because if we elected say Obama, then things would be ran in favor of liberalism, and not all of the other parties. Same goes for let's say Fred Thompson, the democratic half of the country would not get want they want. However, if a moderate ran, then we could have a mix of Democratic, Republican, Conservative, hey even Green values (depending on the candidate), and this would result in not leaving half of the country out of the picture.
Lieberman would not win because many Democrats did not consider him a true democrat and many Republicans tend to think of him still as a Democrat. Not to mention, the main reason why independents are not elected: party loyalty. Loyalists and staunch voters don't realize they're favorite choice only represents one half of the country.
Rudy Giuliani is a Republican who many consider a moderate with a mix of Democratic and Conservative values, and if you look at his stands on the issues, you'll see why he's in between. Now I'm not promoting him, but these is the reason why he has an advantage. He's the top choice for moderates and swing voters. So basically we have an independent running under the Republican ticket. Now compare him to his latest threat, Fred Thompson, along with Hillary Clinton, and you'll see why he's an independent in disguise.
The best solution though, in my opinion, is that our elected official represents a little bit of both ends of the spectrum and most importantly, creates a cabinet based on secretaries who are the best OUT OF ALL, not the best in favor of one party or another. But again, our bi-party loyalists would never disgrace their innefective system that only represents a half of the nation.

I think Michael Bloomberg is the most likely person to run a serious campaign as an independent. By serious campaign, I mean one where he has a real chance at getting more than 10% of the vote.

I keep voting for Nader but the louder, more crowd-pleasing person usually wins anyway.
