Whether I buy cheap or expensive pillows, within a few months they become flat and don't support my head and neck well. Is there a trick to keeping them plump longer?

Nope, no trick.
You have to replace them every 6 months.

First of all..don't buy cheap crap! You get what you pay for , and if you buy cheap pillows, you may as well throw them out after six months. Invest in a good quality goosedown pillow and it will last you 10 years or more! They can be re-fluffed in your dryer or better yet on your outside clothesline on a windy day. I have pillows (goosedown not feather) that are more than 10 years old, that are still fluffy and retain they're original comfort and shape. Pleasant dreams.

Try putting them in the dryer (one at a time) with a tennis ball. It will come out fluffy and the tennis ball bouncing around will keep the pillow from lumping up.

I have heard that you shouldnt keep a pillow longer then 6 months due to bacteria and bed bugs... i would try the dryer and tennis ball idea... but on hot heat to kill any bacteria
