A decimeter is a rarely used measurement for distance equal to 10 cm or 0.1 m. A cubic dm is therefore 10 x 10 x 10 cm, or 1000 cc. There are 1000 cc in a liter, so 2 cubic decimeters = 2 liters.

To make it easy to remember, 1 liter is the volume occupied by a cube 10 cm on each side, and one cubic meter contains 1000 liters, which weighs one tonne if its water. So if you convert everything to cm or m, it is easy to convert distance to volume.
