A fly on the wall means watching when no one knows that you are watching. Like I which I was a fly on the wall in my kids room so I could see what they do and hear what they discuss when I'm not around.

A thorn in my side means something/someone is annoying and irritatin, just like it would be to have a thorn stuck in your skin. It won't come out easily, and is painful and aggravating.

Hope this makes sense :)

A fly on the wall is someone in the room who knows what is going on. People say, "I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in THAT room," it means that they wish they had heard what went down.

I thorn IN my side, not ON, means something that bothers you or is irritating you just like a thorn does.

A fly on the wall is someone who is able to watch and listen to what is going on unnoticed. When someone says, "I wish I could be a fly on the wall," it means that you wish you could listen in on what was going on in private without anyone knowing you were there.

A thorn in my side means someone or something that is a constant annoyance or irritant. "The fact that I never got my degree was a thorn in my side as I went through job interviews."

When someone wishes they were "a fly on the wall" in a situation, they wish they couldve been there and observed what happened without being seen or heard. A "thorn on my side" means something that hinders that person. it could be anything from a person that is holding them back to something like a speech impediment.
