The English have traditionally smoked kippers, that is herring. Smoking is carried out in kilns or forced-air smokehouses that expose the fish to smoke from smoldering wood or sawdust. It adds a particular flavor to the fish!

Unless there was some hashish around, they didn't smoke at all.

Smoking was a habit brought to England by Sir Walter Raleigh.

The Spanish reported seeing Indians in Cuba and other places smoking, but they never adopted the habit. At least not until after Raleigh made it fashionable.

What Doc said. As I've always heard it, the general acceptance is that until Raliegh's expidition that would end up resulting in what is today known as the Lost Colony, tobacco smoking didn't happen back in England.
