It all depends on which wagon a friend might fall off. Basically however, regardless of which wagon, I would ask my friend to think very hard before taking that crucial step. If it is alcohol for example, I would point out that using it as a way of treating anxiety, loneliness, anger, depression is only going to compound whatever is bothering him/her, and making matters worse. I would also point out, that once we make a decision, good or bad, that we are responsible for its consequences. and cannot blame anyone or anything for those consequences. Last, but not least, I would tell my friend that just because he/she either stops believing in reality, or denying that it exists, that reality does not go away. .

Zen's World,
You need to encourage him/her to get right back on the wagon once again. And go to the AA meetings all over again. Because no alcoholic can give anyone guarantee's that they'll stay sober for all eternity. It's a disease and temptations will come and will always go. The question is will they give in this time, or next time. You have to be patient with them, and never give up on them or degrade them for their disease. Because this is the time when they need your support the most. So, you always need to just feed them really good, when their hung-over, and allow them to get plenty of sleep, then have a talk with them if their ready to start fresh once again. But, dont turn your back on them. They can't help it, if satan caught them on a vulnerable day!! That's when they need people to be as supportive of their sobriety as much as possible, when they fall, is when real friends come and dust them off, and help them to get back up and give it all up again. Your a true friend if your all of the above!! God will bless you for being there, for this person, and pray for them, and help them to go back on the wagon once again. You'll see. Smile!!! He/She will love & respect you so much for being there for them unconditionally. But do set down some rules, that they need to try again and again, whenever they blow it. But to try to stay sober longer next time!!

Do not berate them, let them know that falling off happens to most people trying to quit drinking, but that they can quit.
Then encourage them to quit again.
Only say this when they are sober. A drunk will agree or fight, but never remember.
