Making logo images for windows xp?

I am setting up a desktop for my 7 year old son and would like the icons for the browers to be the logo of the site they lead to. Can someone please explain to me how to convert an image into a 'logo' that windows xp will accepts as a logo? It will not take .jpg, .gif, .bmp, etc.
