Wow! I just wrote about this in response to a question about favorite time travel movies!
It IS "The Love Letter", a 1998 TV movie starring Campbell Scott in the present and Jennifer Jason Leigh in the past. It starts when he buys an antique desk and finds a letter in it. Using period stationery, ink and stamp, he responds, posting it at the country's oldest surviving post office, which is a pivotal point in the film.

Yeah, in Frequency the son carves something into the desk to his father in the past. The Lake House they correspond with letters 2 years earlier through the mailbox.

there was an old hallmark tv movie about this...possibly called
the love letter...or just the letter....think it may have had jennifer
jason leigh in it, but i could be mistaken
