That is the passive voice. I need to know what the active voice sentence would be. I know that it starts off with 'Men lead"

Easy one. Men lead lives of quiet desperation.
The value of active voice is that the subject--who is doing the action. In passive voice, the reader has to draw inferences, and that's mental work.
