Fill up the 1/2 cup. 1/2 cup is same thing as 3/6 cup.

Then pour out the content to the 1/3 cup. 1/3 cup is same thing as 2/6 cup.

What's left in the original cup is, 3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6!

I'm guessing this is a math or science class question. As you are dealing with fractions, it is always better to convert them to the common denominator, which in this case is 6. Then you start to see it little more clearly. Then you would be noticing, the difference in the numerator is one... which is what is required for the final answer.

1/2 cup minus 1/3 cup equals 1/6 cup. (3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6)

So fill the half cup. Pour from the half cup into the 1/3 cup. When the 1/3 cup is filled, whatever is left over from the original 1/2 cup will be 1/6 cup.

You fill up the 1/2 cup, and then pour from this cup into the 1/3 cup until it is full. 3/6-2/6=1/6

1/2 C = 3/6
1/3 C = 2/6

Fill the 1/2 C with olive oil. Pour it into the 1/3 C. When the 1/3 C is full, there is 1/6 left in the 1/2 C

Convert the fractions - 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6. You should be able to figure it from there.

1/6 of a cup is also 8 teaspoons so you could also measure it that way if you have measuring spoons.
