the biggest difference is the location of the rear shocks. the dynas have the rear shocks located just behind the driver below the seat on each side of the bike, while the softail has the shocks mounted under the transmission out of sight. thats where the name came from. bikes without rear shocks are called hardtails. harley designed the hidden shock system so the bikes would look like hardtails and have a softer ride, thus the name " soft tail". There are other differences in the two bikes, but that is the main difference.

The biggest, and most defining difference is the shock and spring position. Both the gents above me are correct. There are other differences, but those are the most easily seen.

Softails have rigid mounted 'balanced' engines, dyna's are rubber mounted. You'll get a much smoother ride with a dyna.
