i have had a pair of shoulder pads and shin pads for about 5 or six years now that i use for hockey... is it time to get a new pair even though they are both still in good condition? i thought i read somewhere that shoulder pads should only be used for a certain amount of time. is this right?

it really depends, i know a guy who canges all his gear like every 2 or 3 years, but his old gear is always in reasonable condition, good enough foor at least another few years. if your pads are worn of by now, then yeah, its time yo get new ones, but if they're still good and confortable and they still protect you, then you can keep them!! it's really up ti you, there's no standard time.,although if you're tired of your pads or would just like new ones, i recommend either keepinhg the old gear as back up or selling it!

Craig Ludwig of the Stars used one pair since he started playing high school hockey! He would just keep modifying them if they got a bit torn up. Those things were almost like goalie pads by the time he retired.....

Brendan Shanahan uses 2 pairs of 'soft' shoulder pads, both were bought in the mid-80s.

you're the best judge of it. how much does it hurt to get hit? if you're shattering your solder every time you get checked then yeah get some new ones, otherwise save the money.
