I'm at Northwood University in West Palm Beach, FL and it seems like everyone stays up until 4 AM partying and yelling and going in each others rooms all night. My roommate tends to leave the door open and people come in and go through my stuff and the other roommate is from Bulgaria and gets calls at 5AM on, and I am getting no sleep and I can't study worth crap. Is this normal for other colleges? I feel like I'm the only one that doesnt get trashed or high and I get put down for it. I don't even know where I could transfer if it came to that, I'm from 18 hours away in Delaware and I loathe all of the local schools up there for "atmosphere" or "location", etc.

Do you live in a frat house? No, not all colleges are like that. I live in a house of 5 guys and we all respect each other and we are all serious about our education so we don't stay up all night partying in the house. If we party in the house, it is usually on the weekends. If we want to party during the week, we go out. There are plenty of places for us to go, besides none of us like being cooped up in the house and want to get out.

You might want to look for another place to live. I use to live with a bunch of people that didn't have classes before 11am so they always partied into the early morning. Yet most of my classes were between 8 and noon. Needlessly to say our sleep schedules didn't coincide and I moved out.

Or look for another college like Flagler or Stetson colleges. Those are small colleges in pretty nice areas.

Welcome to Freshman life! Unfortunately, the first few weeks of freshman dorm life can be a little out of control - at any college.

Speak to your RA about the "open door" problem I'm sure she would happily stop by some evening and explain why that is a hazard or rule violation or some such story. (without letting your roomie know you reported it).

It's time to find the library. Also, put a request in for a room change ASAP. Freshman drop like flies during 1st semester.

You would have NEVER seen any of this on a sanctioned "campus tour" - so don't blame your folks too much!

Yeah your at a party school. You should try going to the library to study, otherwise its just going to cause you to hurt someone. You need to talk to your roommate and explain that you can not get enough sleep and the things that are bothering you. Chances are she is unaware. Be nice about it and stay calm. I mean she is probably not use to this much fun and partying. For her it is exciting and she is enjoying herself. She needs to have fun but she needs to respect you as her roommate. She will understand and she should try to be more polite and considerate of you. Just talk to her and tell her what is up but for god's sakes do it nicely. There is no reason to cause a fight between you two. She is probably a really sweet person and just thinks it is so cool how everyone is acting. She needs to make sure that she studies and keeps up. Your not her mother but you might want to keep an eye out for her. Well I wish you the best of luck. It was not near that bad at the University of Kentucky when I was, I graduated in May. Well good luck!! =)

It's been awhile since I went to college, but I hope you know it's not you. If this goes on *all the time,* then that will have serious implications for your studies.

To be sure, there are some times when partying is going to happen at any school, but there are resident assistants who should maintain order for the most part.

I'd check out other schools, if I were you. Maybe you loathe Delaware and its surroundings, but had you considered smaller schools in Penna., such as Wilkes University (my alma mater), King's College or other schools in PA?

Good luck to you.

Not all schools are like this. But the situation is not hopeless. You need to make your needs clear to your roommates. It is completely unacceptable for anyone to be coming in and out of your room and going through your stuff. You need to make that clear...you can trot off to the library at times, but also make it clear when uninterrupted "study time" will be in your room.

I am sure you are not alone at school. Utilize your RA to negotiate living conditions.

no not all colleges are like that. some have curfews and "quiet time" at some point in the night to the early morning. most Christian schools are like this.
