It could be colitis or crohn's he needs to see a doctor and get a Colorectal scope to see if he has either of these diseases. My brother has ulcerative colitits and the poor boy tries to control it but sometimes stress gets to be too much and he has a flare up. It is controllable but it's not fun. Good Luck

I don't understand people. I mean, is he having diarrhea literally every day for the past year? Or, just once in a while he has diarrhea? Because if I'm getting diarrhea every day for a year, you bet your *** I'm going to the doctor after about a week. I mean, at first you think, maybe it's something I ate, then you think, ok, maybe I'm sick. But after a week, if I've still got the runs, I'm going to the doc. Just because diarrhea is so uncomfortable.
Anyway, could be Crohn's disease. Or maybe irritable bowel syndrome. Or colitis.

By diarrhea do you mean loose, watery stools several times a day? Is it frank blood (bright red) or dark colored? It could be an indication of ulcerative colitis or crohn's disease--has he lost weight? It could also be an intestinal infection or worse case, an indication of colon cancer. I would not wait when someone has had diarrhea for that long and it is accompanied by blood--it could be quite serious. They will do some blood tests, perhaps stool sample and colonoscopy(if results are not indicative of an infection) Take care of your boyfriend, good luck.

It could be a lot of different things !
You bf could have early onset of IBS etc he would be better seeking medical advise from a doctor, if he does have the above it is not a big deal lot's of friends have had this problem and control it with diet, does not always have to be pills.

What colour is the diarrhea? If it is black, he may be bleeding internally. How does he feel?
