No, you shouldn't EVER machine wash a comforter filled with goose down.
It is possible to hand wash, using a bath tub, and wool wash, lots of changes of water, but it is hard and heavy work.
Better is to get it professionally cleaned, in order to maintain its insulation (fluff) and warmth.

NOT a good idea! It won't dry properly and the filling will clump and compact, leaving very uneven coverage. The net result will be that the comforter is ruined. The down can actually begin to decompose and stink like a dead animal!

Comforters are never meant to have contact with your skin. They are meant to be used over blankets which are laid atop the sheets which are the only bedding items that should come into contact with your body. The way to care for a comforter is to air it frequently - that means hanging it outside in the dry air for several hours. Some spray-on fabric conditioners can help with odors too, but be sure you don't actually soak the comforter with the spray. Use the spray LIGHTLY and according to the directions on the can.
A quilted comforter, on the other hand, usually CAN be laundered - but it won't be filled with goose down.

You should never machine wash a down comforter. You may hand was it if absolutely neccessary. Washing it strips the feathers. You should use a duvet cover, so you won't need to wash it.

Best to get it dry-cleaned, as it will weigh a ton when it's wet and will take forever to dry otherwise, and it will smell like wet feathers for a long time!

Chances are pretty good your washer and dryer wouldn't be able to handle a load like that anyway. Best to have it professionally cleaned.
