I forgot...was it salt or fresh?

It can be either one - tropical only refers to the temperature. "Tropical" is above 76o (generally 76-82o, but some can go higher), or fish that generally would need a heater in their tank (unless you have a very warm room for them). Just as Tropicals can be either salt or freshwater, so can coldwater species.

There are saltwater tropical fish, brackish water tropical fish (mix of salt and fresh water) and freshwater tropical fish. Almost all freshwater fish commonly kept by aquarists are tropical, with goldfish as the most common exception. The advantage to freshater fish in general is that they are usually much easier to keep the tank steady and the fish healthy than saltwater fish.

Tropical just refers to any fish (fresh or salt) that require a constant water temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.

tropical is based on temperature. it is both salt and fresh except its called brackish water, where it is freshwater with high salinity.

tropical at most LFS relates to freshwater though.

But tropical marine fish is also sometimes used.
