first of all, are most women at least SOMEWHAT dilated once they reach 39 weeks? If you weren't, did you go over your due date?

also, could you "feel" when you began to dilate, and if you could what did it feel like? thanks!

im asking because last week at 38 weeks i wasnt dilating at all. however for the last two days I had moderately strong and constant menstrual like cramping that i thought might be the beginning of labor. however I woke up today and felt perfectly NORMAL. (bummer!) Going to the Dr. friday, Im wondering if maybe that was my cervix finally beginning to dilate

At 36 weeks I was dilated to 1 and 50% effaced. At 37 weeks I was dilated to 2 and 100% effaced. At 38 weeks I was dilated to 4 and I went into labor during my doctor appointment. I had not idea I was dialted, didn't feel any contactions at that point. A normal preganncy lasts 38-42 weeks, so it's fine not to be dilated at 39 weeks. If you're 42 weeks and not dialting then it's time to be induced!

With my first I had him at 39 weeks. I became dilated at 38 weeks to 1 cm. and I don't remember ever actually FEELING my cervix open up but it could be the little cramps (or contractions) you get every now and then. I'm 35 1/2 weeks now and I get contractions all the time (irregularly) and I haven't dilated at all, the doctor said my cervix was just very soft, so I dont really think you feel it!

with my first, I was not dilated at ALL by 39 weeks. I went over my due date. I actually wasn't dilated at all at 41 weeks, and had my daughter at 41 weeks 3 days. You don't have to be dilated to go into labor - contractions CAUSE dilation, so you could start contractions that will then cause you to dilate.

At 38 weeks, I wasn't dialated at all, either. I never felt the dialation when it did happen. We scheduled the c-section for the next Monday (39 weekd), but I fooled them and went into labor on Thursday night. LOL I was in labor until 6 am when I went into surgery.
I response to one of your earlier questions, I didn't know I was in labor. I didn't realize what the pains were going to feel like. I had some of the abdominal cramping like you have had, but my LABOR was mostly in my inner thigh muscles. I thought I had pulled a groin muscle because I had worked (translate: nested) all night the night before cleaning my house. When my urine (I thought I was peeing on myself) was WHITE, I realized I needed to call the doc (10pm).
Good luck and best wishes.

I may have been odd at first pregnancy. I was due on Friday, Nov. 3rdI went to my appt. on Monday, Oct 30, no dilation, no softening of the cervex, I started feeling something around 10p that night, by 2a I was in full back labor, called mom (husband out of town for work)at 5a, by 2p Tuesday, Oct. 31 full labor, went to the doctor, still not dilated, she sent me to hospital, 9p that night she put in "stilts" to dilate me, at 1:30a when she checked me I was only 2 cm (remember once you get a spinal block or drug it slows dilation down), at 4:30a I was totally "efaced" I had my son just before 7a. Completely opposite with second, went into labor just after midnight, had her before noon. I wouldn't worry at all, and just follow the doctor's advice unless completely against your beliefs.

i'm sure you have progressed, thats the way it happened to me at 37 weeks i started having tightening in my stomach and cramp like pains and when i went to the dr. i was 1cm.
then my pains were getting really severe every night before bed they would even keep me up with lots of pressure on my pelvic bones and sharp pains down there, so i went to my 38 wk. check up i am now dialated to 2cm. and he said he could feel the baby's head. i haven't had them severe pains again yet but I do have some pains through out the day everyday.
my next app. i won't be shocked if i'm 3 cm.
I'm sure you will be dialating soon, it will probably happen very fast. congrats!!! i'm due the 24th of sept. with my third,(all boys) lol!!!
