You first have to shut the water valve feeding the faucet, then take the faucet apart. Depending on how the faucet is constructed, there is usually a rubber gasket in the faucet that needs to be replaced, which is why it leaks.

But there are some faucets that have the inside constructed as a one-piece valve assembly, in which it requires that the entire assembly be replaced.

It's not hard, actually in either case. Just be sure to shut off the water supply to the faucet before taking it apart.

have you experts forgot about the " seat " maybe it is not good anymore ????? after you do all the dissembling before you put back stick you little finger in there and feel in a circular motion to see if there are any imperfections in the seat ( this applies only to the 2 handle faucets at least to my experience ) if that is the case use a flat head screwdriver and unscrew the seat but make sure it fits nice and tight in there because if u strip it it will be a pain to get out go to your local hardware store buy another and then reassemble the faucet.
