Yes. That was president Cheney's intention all along.

The Iraqi occupation, and it IS an occupation, is a disaster.
We invaded Iraq on the pretext of WMD's, when that failed to be true it changed to ousting Saddam and bringing democracy to a nation that had been under the rule of tyrannical dictator. ( a dictator we funded and helped install into power no less)
The Iraqi government has stated that we can leave anytime we want and that they no longer need or want our help. Why are we still there? Is it because this war was never truly about bringing democracy and something far more calculating and evil that most do not want to admit? If we invaded to bring freedom and democracy why do we ignore the wishes of the government the Iraqi people elected into power?
So many mistakes have been made in Iraq, from invading in the first place to deciding all former Saddam "loyalists" would be ineligible for military and police service and disbanding both when they were desperately needed in the aftermath of toppling Saddam.
We told the world and Iraq we would stay as long as needed, they say we can leave, our media ignores this, our President ignores this and the American people ignore this. Much of the Middle East hates the US for our foreign policy and habit of manipulating the governments of countries where we have something vital to us at stake. By staying in Iraq past the point where they want our help, we only further reiterate their assessment of the US and our intentions for their countries. We are creating more terrorists daily, they flood to Iraq en masse. Iraq is a breeding ground for terrorists, it is a battle ground for their purposes of training more terrorists to further attack us. They learn our weakness, one of which is being too stubborn to admit when we were wrong. No much like the British red coats marching single file while the indians and settlers hid in the woods picking them off, we stay in Iraq.
Much like the impact of aiding the Taliban and using them in the Afghan/Russia war, we will be feeling the sting of the Iraq war long after we are out of that country.

I find it funny that so many are naive and believe what is spoon feed by them by the media and by sites like Daily Kos and Moveon.org, and the rest of the George Soros Anti-American Hate machine.
If you think that Al Qaeda, just showed up in Iraq when we got there than I guess you believe in the tooth fairy as well. Fact Saddam and Osama not the best of friends and had many differences, but they had 2 common enemies, Israel and The U.S.. Now Saddam was a State supporter and state director of terrorism against both countries, this allowed a safe Haven for Al Qaeda in Iraq along with Training and recruiting Facilities. Saddam Funded the 2 U.S. Embassy bombings in 98 by Al Qaeda that wounded 5,000. Did Iraq have ties to 9-11 No, but were they a safe haven for terror activity yes. Look at Iraq as what Happened in Europe after world war 11, we set up bases throughout Europe and Asia to ensure stability in those regions and we will continue having bases in the Middle East to ensure stability and to stop madmen from destroying those who want freedom, and to ensure Israel doesn't wipe them all out in a all out holy war, remember 1968, Israel defeated 8 Arab countries in 6 days, with terrorism the way it is, it would be very bloody with civilian causalities reaching World War 11 levels on both sides, I'll take the lesser of the 2 evils, U.S. dominating the region to ensure Stability

We are in an unconstitutional, illegal, unjustified, immoral 'war' against another sovereign nation that in no way threatened, provoked or attacked the United States.
We will 'occupy' that nation for decades - perhaps even generations - until every drop of oil has been sucked out of Iraq's sand. We are 'in' Iraq for OIL and WAR PROFITEERING. Nothing else. We are not there to bring democracy to Iraq; establish peace in the Middle East, or defend our country against 'terrorists' from some unknown 'evil empire'. We will occupy Iraq for as long as it is in our 'national interests' (interpret that to mean, "What is all of OUR oil doing underneath THEIR sand?").
If that's not the case, WHY is the U.S. building the largest embassy in the world on a 104-acre site in downtown Baghdad overlooking the 'new' Iraqi puppet government installed by the Bush administration?
If we actually intend to withdraw soon, WHY is Halliburton building fourteen (yes - 14!) new permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq?
It is, indeed, an 'occupation'.
The number-one non-military 'benchmark' which the Bush administration wants Iraq's Parliament to pass into law requires Iraq to surrender two-thirds of its oil reserves to multi-national oil companies.**
Bush lied to Congress, hoodwinked the American people and conned our valiant soldiers into believing there was honorable purpose behind this attack on Iraq. Nothing could be further from the truth: we have allowed 675,000 Iraqis to die and sacrificed 3,800 U.S. soldiers' lives all so that a handful of wealthy elitists, industrialists and power brokers can become wealthier and more powerful. -RKO- 09/12/07

Occupation?????????????? I am sorry, maybe I am just crazy or suffering from actually paying attention to the facts, but didnt the Iraqis hold several elections already, including one ratifying a Constitution and isnt the US doing everything it can to train the Iraqi police and gvt so that they can hand over control of everything back. It is the Iraqi gvt and people that arent doing their part right now. The Iraqi gvt is BEGGING us not to leave them high and dry. The people for the most part are glad Hussein is gone and the US is still around since their own gvt hasnt got things under control
We arent fighting the Iraqis anymore people. We won that war in days. We are fighting terrorists that want total control for themselves. They want nothing better for the US to leave so that they can have all the power over the Iraqis for themselves. We dont want to stay. We are trying to train these people to do their own policing. When the Iraqis step up and take more responsibililty for their own country and freedoms then the US can leave. Until then their own gvt, that they now elected, has no desire for us to just pick up and go.
I would hardly call that an occupation.
Right now its a war against terrorists to help the Iraqis stabilize their country. Do you not understand that the Iraqi gvt, despite all the crying from the far left, absolutely does not want the US to leave right now. We are there with the cooperation with the freely elected Iraqi gvt. If we lost their cooperation it would probably mean we would pick up and leave. Part of the problem is the gvt is playing both sides. They dont want us to leave because it would mean basically deserting their country to people that would do it harm. They also need to play to the ignorant masses that have to blame all their ills on someone, absolutely forgetting what it was like living under a dictator like Hussein. This is going to take time and the people need to start doing their part. There come a point, and I dont think we are there yet, when we have to say if you people cant get some guts and step up to the plate and take care of your own freedoms then you will be left to these terrorists, but we just arent there yet. We still have a good shot at success by reminding the Iraqi people what it is they have to gain. You have to remember these are a people that have been living under a brutal dictatorship for most of their lives. That takes a psychological toll. They dont fully understand what it takes to maintain the kind of freedoms we take for granted over here in the western world. I have faith they can step up and realize it. I think its still worth trying. And if we get to kill a few thousand terrorists, that would have absolutely still existed had we never gone over to Iraq, then thats a bonus. This is a cause worth fighting. We need more allies in the middle east. We needed a better stronghold in the middle east. I dont think a lot of people realize, or remember, just how lethal and evil these people are over there that want to blow us up over here. I am absolutely amazed we havent been attacked again since 911, but I am pretty sure we will be hit again. We need more intelligence and more influence in the middle east. That is what this war was about, creating a stable, US friendly stronghold in a region where our biggest lethal threats come from.

It's not an occupation no matter how much you want it to be. The question I have is it just the begining for terrorism, will there be more plans for attacks in the future? Yes, and no Demos will try to stop that.

It would only be considered an occupation if we were not invited guests now, which we are.
I am sure if the Iraqi government asked us to leave we would.
