Actually the goal of the 1973 war was not to annhilate Israel but to force Israel to the bargaining table, which is exactly what happened. Sadat knew that he had no chance of a significant military victory over Israel, but he needed to shake Golda Meir and Isarel loose from their intransigent and arrogant position of refusing to engage Arabs in any sort of peace process.
The war looked like a victory for Israel because they ended only miles from Cairo, after they were sent reeling by the initial surprise of the attack. The 1973 war was the worse war for Israel up to that point for the number of casualties they suffered. Captured Israeli solders were paraded on television, which is a humilation that Israelis had never suffered before.
Sadat, in the end, can be said to have lost the battle but won the diplomatic war afterwards, as the Israelis had to give up their immediate gains and were eventually brought to a settlement with Egypt, which was Sadat's goal from the very beginning of his assumption of power in Egypt.
To the poster below, it was Sadat's movements towards peace, which after many Israeli-rebuffed attempts at peace had to be be kick-started by going to war, that was bold and even revoltionary in the context of the time. Israel only finally reacted diplomatically when they had no choice.

Israel clearly defeated all of the armies against it. Sinai was given back during negotiations between Israel and Egypt at which time America acted as middle man. Israel is still holding the Golen Heights and they recently gave back Gaza and the middle ground held since 1973. They did not give Jerusalem back...nor will they.

That was 4 years later in 1977 during the Camp David Accords and the Israeli-Egyptian Peace treaty. Israel essentially gave Egypt the Sinai back to promote peace in the region. I call that a very bold and admiral move by Israel to reach a peaceful outcome.

the concern is extremely straightforward: what's meant by ability of "triumphing a conflict"? the respond is: accomplishing one's targets by using militia movements. What grew to become into Egypt's objective interior the Yom Kippur conflict? To seize the Sinai from Israel by using militia movements. Did this take place? No. consequently, Egypt did no longer win the conflict. consequently, every person who argues in any different case is purely incorrect. Pointing to the actuality that Israel surpassed the Sinai back to Egypt 5 years later (as some would do) thoroughly misses the factor. That action grew to become right into a results of a non violent mutual talk and next treaty agreed to by ability of the two factors. It grew to become into no longer a "militia victory" for Egypt.

Because the ultimate goal of the 1973 war was total annihilation of Israel. Given that Israel still exists, I would say they won.

They won the 73 war and gave back the Sinai as part of a latter peace treaty with Egypt. Do they not teach that in your history books.

they didn't win, but they didn't lose thanks to the US. it was a proxy war and one of the times we came closest to a nuclear war. Israel threatened to nuke Cairo and Damascus if we didn't send more weapons.

I have a better question, with there being 41 predominately Muslim countries, why cannot the Muslims simply leave the only Jewish country alone, and let them live in peace?
