Are you putting him down awake? If not that's probably the reason. He's waking up somewhere different than where he fell asleep and that causes babies to cry. All babies wake up several times, but they should go back to asleep without crying, and when they cry it's because something is wrong. As soon as we started putting our daughter down awake, she started sleeping though the night. It was hard at first because she fell asleep nursing, and I would have to keep her awake while doing it, but it worked.

my baby does that when he has a burp or gas that just won't come out...frustrating for everyone! maybe something baby ate is causing discomfort, as you wonder...maybe try the gripe water or oval? (although both never seem to work for me)

Burp the baby, check the diaper, his clothing..
If nothing works, hold him close, he probably needs your warmth and be close to you, rock him , sing lullaby..
