my letting agent wants a written work reference before she lets the apartment to me.
do letting agents actually check out these references (i.e. write back to them, or ring them) or do they just need them as standard practice and put them away 'in a file'?

All they are trying to do is check that you have a Job and can pay the rent ... so most Landlords will check with your Employer.

Works HR Dept. will confirm your Job Title, Salary and how long you have been employed there (assuming you gave those details to the Landlord).

If you got a Reference from some-one at work, the Landlord will check the person who gave the Reference actually works there, and maybe their Job Title & then ask to speak to that person (to confirm that they actually did write the Reference).

Yes agents to check as landlords wants to know majority of the time if you are a good tenant. The referencing company sends a report via e-mail or fax over with the grade you passed on. Passed, guarantor or fail.

I would say that most of them check - it's just like when you have an interview for a job and they ask for references.

Generally, they want the reference to prove that you are in full time employment and can afford to pay the rent. Your boss isn't going to know what kind of tenant you would make, so I wouldn't worry if you don't particularly get on with your boss or anything like that.

As long as you can afford the rent, you shouldn't have anything to worry about!

Sometimes companies, landlords etc do check references.
I was called on friends applications many times. Yes, sometimes they do call. They call to see what kind of person you are or how long the person has known you. Stuff like that.
No worry, if your information is correct.

I check all professional references. Work and past landlords. I do not bother calling the "references" as they are friends and will not be candid.

Some check, some don't - but if they check and find out it is a forgery, they can kick you out of your flat for fraud.
