My 13 month old son usually chokes on everything he eats, but just recently he is throwing it up about an hour after he eats. He will start coughing and them throw up - not spit-up real and lots of throw up. The doctor says it's just a reflex but I have never heard of any kid doing that before and I work with lots of kids his age. It is getting scary becasue he is doing it a lot when he is sleeping and we are cleaning it up in the middle of the night ( bath, change bedding , etc.) Is this okay?

He was exclusively breastfed until he was 11 months so he just started eating sloid food not that long ago. We tried he just never wanted it.

You may want to elevate his mattress at night, by putting a pillow or 2 underneath the mattress where his head is. I would limit his milk intake before going to bed too. If he falls asleep while drinking a bottle, I'd stop that and make sure he's elevated for at least 30 minutes after his milk, and then get him to sleep another way. Also, since he's gagging on food I'd say he's having issue with consisitency of the food, and you may need to sorta start over with it. Chop his food really small and as he tolerates it increase it back up to a normal consistency. I have worked with a couple of children with the same symptoms and these suggestions have helped them. Good luck.

He could still be having problems with the consistancy. Since he's new to solids he's probably not quite got the hang of chewing it really well. If your doctor says it's just reflux, maybe he's right. If it worries you too much get a second opinion.

I would ask the doctor why medicines are not working. If he blows you off get another doctor.
