I was recently new to soccer , and today in practice I picked up being Goalie. It was real fun ! Funner than any other position (for me) , and I blocked about 4 shots. This Saturday though I have a game and I'm going to ask my coach to be goalie (because our current goalie doesn't even show up to practices or doesn't take it seriously) . What should I Learn until then ? Anything to help me become fearless ,help me dive better , or just basic fundementals ? What supplies do I need ?

Thanks

The best way to learn goalie is to practice with other goalies. I've seen goalies practice with each other, working on their leaping, reaction time, diving. They have a mutual respect for each other, so that can make it easier to get along.

Make sure to get some sliding shorts & pants. Goalies also are obsessive about their gloves. They spray them with all sorts of liquids to get them to keep them sticky.

I play soccer and I've played goalie a few times. It is a challenge, but if you have fun with it, you can be pretty good. Also remember, the goalie is the leader of the defense, so don't be afraid to raise your voice and tell your players where to position themselves.

I've played a bit of goalie in my day and just have a few tips

-Always put your hands behind the ball- this may seem basic but i cant tell you how many new goalies I see trying to catch the ball and because it is going so fast gor through their hands. By putting your hands out flat you give your self a decent chance to catch it but will always atleast knock the ball down

-Remember to work the angles- it is important for goalies to cut off an angle towards the goal for a shooter. Watch penalty kicks: the shooter has tghe entire goal to shoot at and thus has a good chance of making it. But if the goalie approaches the shooter a bit more then the goalie is blocking a larger part of the goal and dictating where the shooter can shoot

-When it comes to diving you have to just release your fear and trust your insticts. If you're focused on the game and a shot comes odds are being afraid of getting hurt wont be on your mind. Diving is still an important part of goalie so you and a friend should go out to feild and have him shoot on you. Make sure he shoots at the corners so you will have the oppurtunity to dive. Also have him dribble around and shoot at different times from different places so you get more experience.

I hope this helps and good luck with the game.

Hey rookie, i was a goaltender for about 15 years. First off you need some equipment. Check out the website Eurosport.com. You definetly need some goalkeeping gloves. A shirt with some elbow padding is important as well. Some basic fundamentals as a keeper, create a triangle using your thumbs and index finger from tip to tip. This is how you want to catch or stop a shot. Any rolling balls or low shots, kneel with one knee to protect the ball from passing through your hands and into the net. Also, be very vocal. You want to control your defense. Make sure men are being covered. Yell "keeper!!" when your calling for the ball. Feel free to email me with any other questions and good luck!

Short Term- put your thumbs together and make a "W" with your hand. this is how to catch balls above your chest and when you dive. Now put you elbos at your sides and stretch out your forearms. This is how you secure balls below your chest. Hint.. when you dive dive only on your sides, good goalies dont get the front and back of their jersey's dirty only their sides and arms. and BE Agressive. B-E Agressive

Long Term- Get a goalkeeper trainer. Your coatch probably knows some soccer guys with experienced keepers.
