a mountain is just one mountain. thats it. there are no other mountains surrounding it. a mountain range is a bunch of mountains close together.

A mountain is a name given to a specific land form.

A mountain range is a series of mountains.

An example, Mount Shasta, Mount Rainier and Mount Hood, are all mountains in the Cascade Mountain Range.
