I also just started charting and was totally confused at first. The best thing I found was the free 20 day e-mail "class" offered by Fertility Friend. It walks you through all the aspects of BBT charting and what to expect when. Good Luck!

you need to start checking your temp the day your period starts. That will help you determine more or less where your normal BBT is at. Then as your cycle progresses you may see a dip in temperature (not all women have this) which means you are right about to ovulate. Once the temperature goes up (above your temp during and right after your period) then you are no longer ovulating. Your temp will stay up until you get your period, by then it will start to fall back down to your starting temps. If you are pregnant, however, you may notice a dip (implantation dip) about 10-12 days after ovulation, then you will see an increase in BBT and it will stay up for at least 16-18 days, after that you can test and most likely get a BFP.

To really figure all this out, you have to give it at least 2 cycles.

Hope this helps.

There is a good book to buy by Toni Walsh it is called taking charge of your fertility. It explains everything. Your temps during your period can go up and down but after they should remain low and then after ovulation they increase. You have to make sure that you take your temperature before you get out of bed and at the same time every morning and after sleeping for at least three hours. If you sleep in then just make a note on the chart. You must also be consistent how you take your temperature throughout your chart, ie orally or internally but not a mixture of both. You must also chart your cervical mucus as to have an accurate guide as to when you are ovulating you should use both your temperature chart and the details that you have written down about your cervical mucus. You are at your most fertile when you have an egg white mucus. I hope this helps.

They go up the day after ovulation and stay elevated until you get your period, or stay high if you are pregnant. With my current pregnancy I knew I was pregnant when I woke up the day my period was due and my temps were high. I confirmed it with a test an hour later.
