why do teachers assign ridiculous questions for essay topics? that's a pretty tough assignment-I thought that's what a rhetorical question was-asking a question where you really don't need an answer, you're just stating the obvious. Good luck on that one!

That's a strange assignment. A rhetorical question is asked to make your audience think rather than to get an answer. For example, "How much longer must our people endure this injustice?" Bob Dylan's song "Blowing in the Wind" is almost completely composed of rhetorical questions (see second link). The poem might trigger an idea for your paper.

If this or another answer here proves helpful in your research, you can encourage good answers by choosing one answer as the "best answer."

Cheers,
Bruce

how can you write a paper using only rhetorical questions? that would not be a paper, that would be writing a set of rhetorical questions.

GWB would be a good topic.

You could write about anything that is just completly obvious and wrong so it becomes rhetorical. Like "Is this world fair?" (you can use that but I don't thinks it's that good) Think of things your passionate about and really feel for. I always find that helps to make an essay better. Tell me if you get a good grade! (I won't be offended if you didn't use this advice. I know it sulks!)

Just ask question that you know you don't or won't like the answers to. That's what a rethorical question is by the way, for those that don't know, it's a question you ask but don' actually want an answer to.
